The Rosefinch Spa

  • What is a facial and why do I need one?
    • A facial is a deep and thorough cleaning of the skin followed by masques, massage, extractions and various other treatments deemed necessary to achieve the goals established during consultation. Exfoliation is usually key in this process. There is steam, warm towels and professional products used throughout. The client is laying comfortably on a treatment bed, in a smock, fully draped. We assure you that you will be educated and informed about the needs of your skin.

  • What is a peel?
    • Facial peels treat myriad concerns: Fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, aging caused by sun damage, improving the appearance of mild scars, treating certain types of acne, treating age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or birth control pills and overall improvement to the look and feel of skin.

  • What skincare lines does The Rosefinch Spa use?
    • We use Dermalogica in the treatment rooms and for sale in our reception area.
  • What kind of wax do you use?
    • We use the absolute best strip and hard waxes available.

  • What is hard wax?
    • Hard wax is a low temperature wax used for coarser hairs or sensitive skin. It hardens as it dries on the skin, shrink wrapping itself around the hairs to be removed. It is more gentle than strip wax because it is not sticky after hardening, therefore leaving the dermis more intact.

  • How long does my hair need to be?
    • This varies from person to person but in general it’s recommended that you wait at least ten days after shaving and at least three weeks in between waxes.

  • How long does waxing last?
    • Most clients, after establishing a good waxing routine, can expect a couple of weeks of very smooth skin followed by a regrowth period of a week or two. With continued waxing you will notice a decrease in the amount of hair overall.

  • Is there any reason I shouldn’t wax?
    • Possibly. If you are currently or recently on a prescription exfoliant such as Retin-A, Accutane, Tazarac or Differin (to name just a few) you must inform your esthetician. These products drastically thin the skin making it susceptible to damage, burning and lifting from waxing. In the case of eyebrows we are happy to tweeze instead of wax if this applies to you.

  • What’s a Betweeny wax?
    • As with all of our waxing services, a Betweeny wax is whatever you want it to be. But in general this refers to more than a bikini wax but less than a Brazilian wax in whatever way that works for you.

  • What’s a Brazilian wax?
    • A Brazilian by definition is the removal of all hair from the pubic area including the bum. Many women prefer to leave a strip or triangle or perhaps more (see Betweeny wax.)

  • What should I do before a wax?
    • Light exfoliation cam be very helpful, especially for legs and bikini lines. If you’re skin is dry, light moisturizer is also a good idea.

  • What about after my wax?
    • Post care includes a soothing cream applied by us. If any irritation persists, an anti inflammatory such as hydrocortisone or calendula cream can be used for a day or two.  It is very important to exfoliate on a regular basis, 2-3 times per week, following body waxing to avoid ingrown hairs.

  • Do you wax men?
    • Yes, except for intimate waxing.

  • What is Micro-Needling?
    • Micro-Needling is the use of an electric skin needling device made especially for this purpose. The device is a pen shaped studded with 12 very fine needles. It is a medical device used in micro needling to break down old scar tissue and to stimulate skin cells to proliferate. This cell multiplication results in the formation of new tissue layers of elastin and collagen fibers as well as in new capillaries for an improved blood supply.

  • How does Micro-Needling work?
    • The device slides along the skin, penetrating the upper layers of the skin to a depth of up to 2mm to create numerous tiny needle wounds. The procedure prompts the body to respond through the creation of new collagen and elastin fibers. In response to the stimulus, the skin plumps, thickens and firms, reducing the appearance of scars, fine lines and wrinkles.

  • What effects does the Micro-Needling have on the skin?
      • improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of wrinkles
      • stimulates tissue regeneration, resulting in a firming of the skin
      • disfiguring scars, especially acne scars can be improved as new collagen fibers elevate the depressed scar tissue with the periphery skin
      • pore size reduction
      • improves the appearance of stretch marks
  • What does the procedure involve?
    • A thorough consultation is always performed prior to booking. Once it is established that the client is a suitable candidate for Micro-Needling 30 to 45 minutes before the appointment time the skin can be numbed using a topical numbing agent. (We sell such a cream!) It is highly recommended that one is used to lessen discomfort. For optimal results we use a collagen-stimulating product like Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin-C serum or skin lightener for pigmentation during the procedure. A small handheld pen like device with a sterile, disposable tip with 12 tiny needles is then used to pierce the skin using long, fluid but very controlled strokes. Our needling pen’s multi-speed and adjustable needle depth allow needles to pierce the skin’s layer at 90 degrees and increase the absorption of products. Your technician will be continually adjusting the depth of the needles to most effectively treat each area of the face. After the treatment, soothing Vitamin-C serum or Hyaluronic acid are used to hydrate, heal and protect the skin. We always finish the treatment with a mineral based sunscreen.

  • What will I look like after the treatment?
    • Most people will experience redness and mild swelling in a similar way as mild sunburn for 24-48 hours and there may be minimal pin-point bleeding and/or striping of the skin, these are both very temporary. Within a week or two, you will notice that your skin is smoother and more radiant looking but the full effects won’t be seen for one to three months as the body continues to create new collagen and elastin

  • What should I expect following a Micro-Needling treatment?
    • The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last for 12 to 48 hours. In order to reduce visible redness, we recommend soothing products after the procedure, and to protect the skin with zinc based sunblock. To ensure the right healing environment, for 2-3 days do not use AHA’s (glycolic Acid), retinol, acidic or “active” ingredients. Exposure to sun should also be avoided.

  • Is Micro-Needling painful?
    • Prior to the treatment, numbing cream should be applied to minimize pain that is felt during the procedure. You will experience some discomfort but it is generally well tolerated.

  • How many treatments do I need and how often can Micro Micro-Needling procedures be repeated?
    • Micro-needling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks until you achieve the desired results. For collagen induction we recommend to start with 3 treatments, but with a minimum separation time of 4 to 6 weeks between treatments. For scar reduction an average of 3 to 6 treatments are recommended. The number of treatments required will depend on how each individual responds to the treatments, and the extent of the damage at the beginning.

  • Am I a candidate for the Micro- Needling?
    • Micro-needling can be safely performed on all skin types and all skin colors. As the epidermis and in particular, melanocytes in the basal area are left intact. There is minimal risk of pigment change or post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. Skin micro-needling can treat sensitive and fragile areas that are difficult to treat with other procedures. These areas include the eyes, the neck and the back of the hands.

However, it is not suitable for patients who:

Have a used Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last three months
Have open wounds, cuts or abrasions on the skin
Have had radiation treatment to the skin within the last year
Have any kind of current skin infection, condition, herpes simplex in the area to be treated
      Are pregnant or breast feeding
Have any history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing
